Marikkar
Saidulla,
Sirasa FM, Sri
Lanka
Marikkar came into the fellowship as Director of
Sirasa FM, where he was driving forward unbiased, independent
broadcasting as an alternative to state-influenced media.
Sirasa had won an award for Best News
Provider.
One year on:
"We have loads of plans for diversifying the
visibility and listenership of the channel. Also now I’m in charge of
the promotions division for four radio and three TV channels in
our group. Practically, I do apply tactics and methodologies I learnt in
the fellowship. In particular, I learned about improving social
responsibilities."

Jaya Mahajan,
UTV Software
Communications, India
Jaya was
Creative Director for UTV. This allowed her to concentrate on producing
non-fiction current affairs programmes, with and for international
broadcasters such as CNN and the BBC. Through these programmes, Jaya
showed a strong desire to engage audiences in socio-political issues.
One year on: "We are launching a new business
channel, to compete with CNBC, and I will be part of the core team that
will be setting up the new channel. One of the main reasons for my shift
to the news side of the business has been the fellowship."

Feycal
Caunhye,
Mauritius Broadcasting
Corporation, Mauritius
Fey was the Senior News Editor and TV News
Presenter for MBC in 2006. He produced a number of key current affairs
programmes on social issues in Mauritius, one of which exposed
unwarranted increases by Mauritian banks on interest rates for
borrowing.
One year
on: "The ethical and social responsibility
aspects learnt during the fellowship programme help me gear my news
stories and programmes in a different way. After the fellowship, I have
been asked to contribute actively in the Management of the News Room
with the effect that I am now, almost three times a week responsible for
the management of news bulletins, planning, giving assignments to staff
etc."

Ho Hong Hanh,
The Voice of Vietnam Radio, Vietnam
Hanh
worked her way up from reporter for The Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOVR) to
the position of Managing Editor for the English and Overseas
department. She also led a production team which won an award for a live
broadcast at a national festival.
One year on: "Voice of Vietnam organized a
workshop for those who returned from overseas courses in 2006. I was one
of them. I wrote a presentation about media in the UK, especially the
BBC. To my surprise, my presentation was published in an in-house
journal of Voice of Vietnam."

Karma Wangchuk,
Bhutan Broadcasting Service,
Bhutan
Karma was
one of the three founding members of the television division of the
Bhutanese Broadcasting Service Corporation (BBSC) in
1999. In 2006 he was Senior Programme Producer & Planning and
Development Co-ordinator.
One year on:
"During the national parliamentary mock
elections, I shouldered the responsibility as overall coordinator of the
team and also producer and editor of the election programmes. In future
I will be taking an active part in producing TV programmes that will
promote good democracy in the country as a responsible journalist. "

David Masunda, Voice
of the People Communications Trust, Zimbabwe
David was
the first black business reporter at the Herald in Zimbabwe. During the
fellowship he was Chairman of the private Radio Voice of the People, and
he had spearheaded the relaunch of the radio station outside Zimbabwe
after its Harare operations were closed down by police in December,
2005.
One year on:
"Some of the contacts I made, such as with the Commonwealth Broadcasting
Association have benefited my station and staff. CBA has invited Radio
VOP to be a member and I was guest speaker at the CBA regional meeting
held in Nairobi, Kenya, in January." |
