The 2007 Student Bursaries Film Screening at Channel 4 Cinema

Audience at the One World Student Film ScreeningThe official screening of films supported by the One World Student Bursaries in 2007 took place at Channel 4 cinema at the end of October. The cinema was packed with friends of the One World Broadcasting Trust, film school tutors, and the student film-makers themselves – many of whom had travelled a long way to catch the screening.

Among the films were ‘Just Like Mum’, which concerns a family of Brazilian women who have supported each other through hardship; ‘A Call Too Far’, which studies the culture of telephone call centres in India; and ‘Extradio’, by Cuban film-maker Daniellis Hernandes, which looked at the director’s own life in the UK, and the lives of African people who have come to live in Britain.

The One World Fellows, who were in the second week of their scheme, were also at the screening, and in a couple of cases they were fascinated to see films made in their own countries. Muamar Orabi met the director of ‘Hope Despair Laughter: A Circus Project in Palestine’, which featured a circus workshop based in a refugee camp near Bethlehem, Palestine. Sofia Lopez from Chile was interested to see ‘Volviendo’, a documentary following an exiled Chilean musician travelling back to his homeland.

Approximately ten minutes was shown of each film – and although most of the complete films were about 30 minutes in length, this was still enough to give the audience a real flavour of the talent, creativity, and passion of these young film-makers.

The screening took place in two parts, and during the break the student film-makers had a chance to meet some of the other guests as well as each other. A few also took the opportunity to speak to the Fellows.

On the same day, the students took part in a workshop run by Andy Glynne, the director of the Documentary Filmmakers Group (DFG). The workshop covered a number of topics that are central to moving forward in the documentary industry, including pitching films, writing proposals, and securing funding.
