This observational documentary followed the setting-up of a goldmine in a remote area of Guinea, West Africa, over a two-year period. The filmmakers had access to both the local community, and the staff on the mine. The result was a film that brought home the realities of globalisation, and the way it can change lives and landscapes irrevocably.

The jury said:
"The jury was amazed at what End of the Rainbow managed to film and
the story it managed to tell. The filmmakers followed the arrival of
a goldmining multi-national in a remote jungle in Guinea, West
Africa. They managed to film with the company, the white managers,
the local military who provide security and the local villagers on
whose land the mining was taking place. We saw all sides of the
story. Without any overt judgement, the film portrayed how modern
multi-nationals are exploiting the local population in much the same
way the colonials did a hundred or two hundred years ago. The jury
felt it was like a modern version of a novel by Joseph Conrad, as
the horrific outcomes of perfectly rational, and sometimes
well-meaning behaviour became apparent. As such, the film, whilst
telling a particular story, managed to tell a much bigger tale about
globalisation and exploitation."
