Twelve-year old Mahmoud sells tea to the patients and staff at Al Shifa, the biggest hospital on the Gaza strip. The hospital is also full of armed militants from Gaza’s myriad rival factions. Sometimes these men buy tea. Sometimes they stop Mahmoud getting in. And sometimes they try and kill each other in the hospital car park.

The jury said:

“Tea Boy of Gaza - much of which is filmed in Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital, where armed militiamen wander the corridors and sometimes have gun fights in the car park – is rough and raw, with the director – who also shot the film – taking his chances when he can. Both this film and 'The 12 Year Old Cocaine Smuggler,' (which the Award was won jointly with,) took the viewer into unfamiliar territory, challenging our pre-conceptions; the films gave access to a wide range of local voices; and found ways of integrating the broader political picture into the story they told, moreover they showed the impact of the west on the developing world.”
