Special
Award: Radio Sagarmatha
Launched 10 years ago as South Asia’s first independent radio station, Radio Sagarmatha gave momentum to the pro-democracy movement in Nepal, which eventually led to the restoration of parliamentary democracy in April 2006. A team of roving reporters ensure that everyone gets their say, from city dwellers to those in the most remote regions of the country. Based in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, Radio Sagarmatha has irreversibly changed the landscape of broadcasting in the country.
Mohan
Bista said:
“Radio Sagarmatha is working for social transformation. This is a
community radio station; we work for the people and to create awareness
among people. Most of our programmes are about people’s rights, good
governance, gender issues and discrimination. We are trying to change
the traditional beliefs, giving power to women and the disadvantaged.’’
''We would like to dedicate this award to the Nepali people who fought for freedom of expression and democracy, and thank them for their support through the good and bad times.”
