Anita Tiessen (sponsor UNICEF UK) with Deborah Turness Children’s Rights Award: Romania’s Unwanted Children

The effects of communism have encumbered the Romanian future as many of the country’s children are abandoned orphans, often no older than three years. ‘Romania’s Unwanted Children’ is a compelling exploration of this humiliating phenomenon confronting European officials.

The jury said:

“The way in which Chris Rogers exposed both the illegal trade in unwanted babies and the bleak future of those left behind profoundly affected the panel. But this was not simply a shock story. Chris moved the debate on to the European Parliament, raising awareness with MEP’s and sowing the seeds of legislation and a review that have the potential to materially improve the lives of the children in his reports.”

Chris Rogers said:

“Children are often the most desperate victims in this world and yet are rarely given a voice to cry for help, that’s why I have dedicated most of my career to exposing the abuse of children across the globe. That in turn has made my job my passion. This award will inspire me to keep going, to never give up my role in the fight to give every child victim of neglect, war and abuse their basic right.....the right to childhood. I can only hope this award will also inspire the EU to keep up the pressure on Romania to help its abandoned children rather than hide them and deny their existence.  To receive the oneworld award for Children’s Rights means so much to me because of its recognition for the very cause that makes me so passionate about my job....inspiring... Thank you oneworld.”
