The
2007 One World Media Awards ceremony took place at a glittering
ceremony at Porchester Hall, Bayswater, London. The ceremony
itself was the most successful to date - it was attended by
around 400 leading UK filmmakers, broadcasters, and NGO
representatives.
You can read the full list of winners
here. Some notable winners
included the youngest ever Broadcast
Journalist of the Year Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (right, with
Jon Snow) who
collected the award for her investigative journalism on the
Unreported World series for Channel 4.
Exceptionally, the jury could not separate the two winners of the television
documentary award, which went to Tea Boy of Gaza and
The 12 Year Old Cocaine Smuggler, both from the BBC 2
strand 'This World'.
The 2007 Special Award went to
Radio Sagarmatha, a community
radio station in Nepal, and South Asia's first independent radio
station. Mohan Bista (left) collected the award at the ceremony; he
said:
''We
would like to dedicate this award to the Nepali people who fought for
freedom of expression and democracy, and thank them for their support
through the good and bad times.”
The ceremony also featured an engaging keynote speech from Tariq
Ramadan, President of the European Muslim Network - you can read
a transcript of his speech here.
Jon Snow continued his tradition of arriving at the ceremony in
a highly unconventional manner, this time by using a skateboard,
direct from presenting the Channel 4 News. You can watch his
journey on film here.
